Legends: Arceus takes place hundreds of years before Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, back when the Sinnoh region was known as Hisui. The era's buildings and fashion clearly draw inspiration from feudal Japan, and there aren't any modern conveniences to aid trainers' lives.Feb 3, 2022

Where is Sinnoh, and what is Hisui?

Sinnoh is a region in the Pokemon world first introduced in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. In geographical terms, it’s north of towns Kanto, Johto and Hoenn, which all feature in various Pokemon titles, and is home to unique Pokemon like Turtwig, Chimchar and Piplup.

Sinnoh and Hisui have some similarities, and some differences

Interestingly, there are some major differences between the Sinnoh seen in Diamond and Pearl, and the one in Arceus.

What should you expect from gameplay?

Pokemon Legends: Arceus will be both familiar and new, providing a fresh spin on the traditional ‘catch ’em all’ gameplay of the Pokemon franchise. This go around, there’ll be fewer trainer battles, more exploration, and you’ll be able to throw Poke Balls at wild Pokemon in real-time.

The Arc Phone Looks Too High-Tech For Pokémon Legends: Arceus

As many players were quick to point out, Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ new Arc Phone stands out in the ancient world of Hisui with its modern, technologically-advanced design.

Hisuian Voltorb Creates More Questions Than Answers In Pokémon Legends: Arceus

Speculation about what a Hisuian regional variant of Voltorb would be like started after Pokémon Legends: Arceus revealed its ancient, steam-powered version of Poké Balls in the first trailer. These Poké Balls are made of wood, and the region’s version of Voltorb changes to match with a wood grain texture and thick, cheerful eyebrows.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus Makes The First Pokédex An Ancient Artifact

Throughout the Pokémon series, Professor Oak has been credited with the invention of the Pokédex, placing its creation in the time of the original Pokémon Red & Green.

10 Best: Back To The Past

One of the more surprising elements about Pokemon Legends: Arceus is the time travel. Arceus chooses the hero, for whatever reason, and sends them back in time. The era looks like it should be at the end of the 1800s Japan, or the early 1900s.

9 Worst: Half-Step Battle Evolution

There are good and bad things about the retooled battle system. It’s nice that Pokemon can be fought wherever, and fights do pop up quickly. Unfortunately, it is still turn-based. This is odd because the player can run around the arena while the two Pokemon are fighting.

8 Best: Running And Fast Travel

Players can dash as soon as they can control their character. This is not too different from recent entries in the series, but it is still nice to highlight. The bigger revelation is that fast travel is more robust. Players don’t have to rely on trains or flying Pokemon anymore.

7 Worst: An Empty World With Limited Exploration Abilities

Fast travel and dashing around are nice features in the game. Players will also be able to ride Pokemon to run around faster, climb mountains, fly, and swim. Like other entries in the series, those latter abilities come late into the experience. It would have been nice to swim or climb freely earlier on in the adventure.

6 Best: Crafting

Another trademark of open-world games is crafting. For the first time, Pokemon Legends: Arceus has a robust crafting system. Everything from Poke Balls to potions can be created. All the materials can be found in the environment.

5 Worst: No Voice Acting

The Pokemon games are for everyone but at the same time, it is understood that they are mainly aimed at kids.

4 Best: Saving Anywhere

One thing the Pokemon series has had right since the very beginning was allowing players to save anywhere and at any time. Very few entries have gone against this ideal. If they have then they were spinoffs. Pokemon Legends: Arceus is thankfully just as flexible as the main games.
